ASPIRE Early Years Consultant (EYC) Course - 15th/16th June 2026 in Birmingham

Now into its third year, the ASPIRE Early Years Consultant (EYC) course is aimed at consultant vascular surgeons in their first 5 years and those about to take up consultant posts. The course addresses key non-technical aspects of consultant life, aiming to equip consultant vascular surgeons with the necessary skills and knowledge to more smoothly manage the transition to consultant practice.

We aim to provide valuable learning resources primarily targeted to cover the UK Vascular Surgical Curriculum and review the evidence for clinically prudent questions. Whilst the resources have been designed with the UK vascular surgical curriculum in mind, all vascular and allied health care professionals are welcome, as are ideas for additional educational resources.

VASCULAR DUPLEX MODULES

Six Vascular Duplex Modules have been carefully designed by Mr Ben Warner-Michel and approved by Mr Klaus Bond with the Society of Vascular Technology of Great Britain and Ireland accreditation requirements and the Vascular Surgical Curriculum in mind.

These are intended as a theoretical basis for vascular duplex training, to be reviewed before commencing practical vascular duplex training.

PRINCIPLES OF VASCULAR TRAUMA & AN APPROACH TO NECK INJURIES

An essential session on Vascular Trauma. The CMJAH is a Level 1 Trauma Centre in Johannesburg and during his training, Mr Cassimjee rotated between CMJAH and Baragwanath Hospital - one of the largest hospitals in the Southern hemisphere and likely the busiest trauma centre in the world.

THE EVOLUTION OF CAROTID ANAESTHESIA

Dr Mark Stoneham, a true pioneer in vascular anaesthesia, gives this exceptional and fascinating session on the evolution of carotid surgery and carotid anaesthetic techniques. He tells us about his role in bringing "awake carotid techniques" to Oxford and discusses anaesthetic techniques in detail as well as issues relevant to our daily surgical carotid practice.

This session is one of the highlights of the Oxford Vascular Collaterals programme - you can find it under The OVC "Carotid Series".

VASCULAR DISEASES OF CHILDHOOD & PAEDIATRIC VASCULAR PRACTICE

Miss Meryl Davis is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon who practices Paediatric Vascular Surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She has authored the chapter of the same name in the Oxford Textbook of Medicine.

In addition, Miss Davis is part of the adult aortic team at The Royal Free Hospital and is Clinical Lead for the North London AAA Screening programme. She is a member of the Vascular Society Council and Deputy Chair of The Circulation Foundation.

In this curriculum session, Miss Davis gives us a taster of the vast cases that can present in Paediatric Vascular practice and imparts practical advice for when you find yourself in the middle of a paediatric vascular trauma.
